The University of Akron College of Education offers a comprehensive slate of programs for school and community professionals, with teacher education programs as the centerpiece. Our faculty--and particularly those in the teacher education programs--is a community of learners with wide-ranging specialties and strengths but firmly committed to a common goal: To prepare and support educators at all levels and across a range of school settings for the challenges of the 21st century. The College holds primary responsibility within The University of Akron for producing educational personnel for Ohio schools and colleges, contributing to the positive reform of education, and strengthening the research and knowledge base of the discipline.

New Resources

Curriculum Center materials as well as general Education resources are added to the Bierce Library Collections every day. As the curriculum materials cataloger, I get to see these materials almost before anyone else, which is why I LOVE my job! Here are a couple of the latest acquisitions.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) produces a number of wonderful books each year. Recently we acquired: Mathematics assessment : a practical handbook for grades 3-5. Edited by Jean Kerr Stenmark, William S. Bush and written by teachers currently active in the classroom, this teacher handbook provides background information on the assessment process and the tools used, step-by-step instructions for changing assessment practice, and blackline masters of teacher-developed assessment tasks that can be duplicated and used in the classroom. A companion piece, Mathematics assessment : cases and discussion questions for grades K-5, describes real activities, students, and teachers in assessment situations in grades K-5 classrooms. It also includes reflective questions to encourage discussion about important issues in assessment to explore the role of assessment in reshaping mathematics teaching and learning.
