LCRI 22.1B Revision -- Posted 4/1/2006
FYI, LC is recommending some changes to how personal names are established for persons working in non-verbal contexts. They have put up the suggested revisions on the CPSO site: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/22_1bdft.html.
NACO Guidelines Updates -- Posted 3/2/2006
Two changes have "snuck" into the NACO guidelines, without any fanfare. In fact, different parts of LC documentation are contradictory; however, the folks in the NACO-Music have been in contact with LC and both changes have been verified.
1. For those of you who have been contributors long enough, you’ve probably encountered corporate name changes that required the note “[name not given]” in a 670 for the for work in hand, when the earlier name didn’t appear in the new title. I recently discovered that this guideline had been struck from the DCM Z1 document. I contacted CPSO, and here’s the reply I received from Ana Cristan (CPSO, Library of Congress, Tuesday, February 28, 2006 2:39 PM): There is no replacement practice. If the piece in hand does not contain the information to justifiy the earlier or later heading then you should cite the source that does have the information (be it the WWW or other reference source) or other words the source led you to believe that the heading is either earlier or later. Thank you for your message.
2. You’re familiar with the recent policy to add death dates. There is another change with dates in personal names; it recently appeared in the NACO FAQ on personal names. What should a NACO cataloger do when creating a NAR for a personal name and birth and/or death dates are available but the heading for the same person appears in LC bibliographic records without dates? As of February 1, 2006 catalogers may create the NAR with dates in the 1XX, 4XXs, etc. but they should remember to report BFM for LC records to their Coop liaison and if necessary BFM to the utility in which s/he works.
Death Dates -- Posted 2/9/2006
Effective immediately, LC and NACO members are allowed to add death dates to personal name headings that have a birth date (assuming the person is dead, of course). Note that this does not mean that dates can be added to any heading; only a date of death can be added to a heading that already has a date of birth. Be sure to read LC’s policy about the change. They’ve also compiled a list of headings that they will convert as a project, which they plan to complete by the end of summer.
