Department Meetings
- January 9, 2006
- Update from Russ
- MILCAT Update (Karen/David)
Archive
- June 2005
- We now have a new location for music materials in Bierce. All new scores and monographs about music (or, anything that has a classification number starting with M) will be added to this area. Materials in the general circulating stacks, oversize, Rootstown, and reference will gradually be shifted to the new area. The new music area is on the third floor, directly above the Maps Room (i.e. just north of the elevators). There will be general music stacks, which will contain circulating and non-circulating materials. There will also be a music reference section. The location information in our catalog should stay current; you shouldnt have to second-guess where to look for something. As folks in Circulation get materials to transfer into the new area, they will update the information in III as they re-label the materials. Note that sound recordings will stay in AVS, on the ground floor. If you have trouble finding music materials, check with Don Appleby, Russ Tinkham, or David Procházka for assistance.
- September 2004

- November 2003
- It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our colleague, Christine Rigda. Chris, who was instrumental in putting this site and many of its policies together, has moved to a new position at NEOUCOM (NorthEastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine) as a systems and web librarian. We all wish her the best of luck in her new job!
- Who does what after Christine leaves?
- Master's Theses: we are still going to completely catalog these materials but will use a two-step process. We will set up macros and constant data fields in OCLC for the basic description fields for a thesis record. The students will do the basic cataloging (author, title, physical description, thesis and departmental entries, etc.) and save the record in OCLC. David or I will then finish the cataloging by assigning call numbers, subject headings and any other added entries that may be needed. We'll be developing procedures over the next couple of weeks then can start this project.
- Electronic Publications:
Karen will catalog electronic publications purchased by University Libraries
David will catalog electronic publications provided by OhioLINK - Electronic Serials: David will do the cataloging/updating on electronic serials.
- IEEE: Karen will catalog and update IEEE resources
- ZAC (ZipLINK Advisory Council): David will be the Cataloging Representative
- DMS (OhioLINK Database Management and Standards Committee): Karen will be the UL Representative
- WAYNE:
David will continue to catalog audio materials (cds, music)
David will work on monograph cataloging problems
Karen will continue to catalog videos/kits/dvds
Gina will work on transfers from Wayne to Bierce or Science/Technology
- July 2003
- From the July 28th Cataloging meeting:
- Check out the updated Statistics Report Form
- Catalogers: Please remember to add barcodes to the items you are cataloging! The students will continue to link the items to the bibliographic record, but we will place the barcode on each item.
- Supply requests should be sent to Karen! Unless there is an urgent need for an item, supply orders will be submitted on the first Monday of each month.
- February 2003
- News:
- Training is on-going! Gina is building her skills in monograph cataloging and John is taking over map and atlas cataloging. Joy, Valerie, Gina, John, and Karen are all taking advantage of the learning opportunities in Bierce 61, updating their skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- January 2003
- What's going on?
- Jessica Collura, a graduate student from Kent State University, began a practicum with the Cataloging Department. She'll be learning everything there is to know about how a Cataloging Department functions, how to catalog, how to link items, PLUS she'll be helping us improve this web site! Welcome Jessica!
- Christine has been working with the folks at Wayne College, training them to use OCLC Connexion, and updating their cataloging training.
- December 2002
- Much is happening this month!
- We bid adieu to Cherie Madarash-Hill, as she left UA after 13 years service. Cherie has accepted a position at Sims Memorial Library, Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond LA. Her first day will be January 2nd. We wish her all the best in her new position!
- Who's doing what? With Cherie's departure, we have some work to redistribute and here's the current breakdown:
- David: Print serials, maps and atlases
- Christine: Electronic publications (serials, etc.)
- Karen: Dissertations
- Christine will be moving back to Cherie's old office by December 20th. Hopefuly there will be fewer distractions back there, out of the major traffic zone!
- Just wanted to let everyone know that the folks in AVS are conducting an inventory of their CD collection. Folks will occasionally come into Cataloging to check titles in the CD backlog. David has asked them to let someone in the Department know what theyre up to when they come in.
- The two reclassification/recataloging projects have arrived. Thanks to Rebecca and Jackie, the Dictionary of Literary Biography project is going quickly. The project for S&T is going a bit more slowly. The boxes in front of Karen's office contain the S&T volumes and we've realized that a number of different sets ended up classed with the same number so we're sorting the books by topic and applying the appropriate class. numbers.
- November 21, 2002: New Projects Coming Our Way!
- Remember the Chalmers Stewart collection? Well, we have some more volumes coming our way. Acquisitions gave us a heads up that they packed up the materials (approximately 200 books and some phonodiscs) and will start working their way through them. When they have a truck of the book materials ready, they will bring it to me and we'll divvy it up amongst the copy-catalogers for processing. This project will be high priority!
- Two new recataloging/reclassification projects for December/January:
- Dictionary of Literary Biography for the Reference Dept.
- Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry for S&T Library
- November 1, 2002: ALAO Annual Conference.
- Presenters from the Cataloging Department include: Christine Rigda and Karen Plummer presenting Online Tools... They're For Catalogers, Too!; and Joy Ramos on a panel discussing Why We Do What We Do : Getting Involved Above & Beyond Your Job Description.
- October 30, 2002: Cataloging Meeting, 2-3PM, Bierce 279
- Cataloging Department Website Unveiled: With contributions from all of cataloging's personnel, the new and improved departmental website is finally live!
- Hower House Project on Hold: Hower House is entering its busy season! The multiple boxes of materials ready to come to Bierce for cataloging, have been reshelved for use by their patrons and once things die down again sometime in the winter, Acquisitions will return to Hower House and re-box the materials for us.
- Fall 2002: The Shelves are Here!
- Thanks to Gina and Rebecca for getting our new shelving ranges assembled! They also cleaned out the third floor storage room and organized the materials on our new shelves. Great job!
- Summer 2002: Goodbye Shelf List!
- The old shelf list cards are truly now historic... they moved to Archives over the summer! This has opened up a huge space in the center of Cataloging that we hope to fill with shelving units so that backlogs and projects stored on the third floor can be stored, sorted, and processed more easily in cataloging.
