Cataloging Hower House Materials

Background & Overview

In order to provide access to the bibliographic resources available at Hower House, University Libraries has agreed to catalog the materials at Hower House. The materials will be represented in the UA Libraries Catalog, OhioLINK, and OCLC's World Cat. Once the existing materials are cataloged, additional materials will be relocated from the UL materials at Rootstown to Hower House. Hower House also has a small fund for new purchases. The Hower House materials will all be non-circulating. There will be two locations within Hower House: Hower Library (referring to the reading room on the main floor) and Hower 2nd floor (referring, obviously, to materials kept on the 2nd floor).

Cataloging Guidelines

From a cataloging point of view, the materials in Hower House will be treated as UL materials. There are, however, certain exceptions that are in place to ensure that the aesthetic qualities of the physical volumes are maintained.

Cataloging Mechanics

John Kline will oversee the flow of Hower House materials through the Cataloging Department. He will work with a cart of materials and catalog those materials that have records in ZipLINK or have acceptable copy in OCLC. He will work with David Prochzka to establish needed call numbers for sets. David Prochzka will provide cataloging for the remaining materials. Once all materials on a cart have been cataloged, the materials will receive physical processing by appropriate Cataloging employees.

Physcial Processing

Because we want to maintain the aesthetic quality of the physical materials, we've agreed on a physical processing that is unique to Hower House materials. NOTHING is to be added to the spine or to the front cover of the materials. All required information will appear on the outside or the inside of the back cover. Since this is non-standard processing, it will be handled within the Cataloging Department. We will use standard label sets and barcodes. The "spine" label will be put on the outside back cover, in the lower right corner. On the inside of the back cover, the barcode will be put at the top, and the identifying label (with call number, main entry, title, and OCLC record number) will be put at the bottom. We will not highlight the barcodes in orange, as this would bleed onto the facing pages. You can use item default template 40. Once the cataloging and physical processing are complete, the cart of materials will be returned to Julie Gammon, who will oversee getting the materials back to Hower House.
