MARC 949 Usage :
Record Transfers & Item Records

Overview

Using this field in OCLC simplifies the task of creating item records, assigning locations and overlaying records in INNOPAC. Only a few of these codes are routinely used. Knowing some of the others that are available may be useful for special projects.

Transferring Records

Example:
949    *recs=b;ins=cat;ov=.bxxxxxxxx;bn=wayne;b3=-;

Basics:

Tag:                   949
First Indicator:       Blank
Second Indicator:      Blank

Fields are separated by a semicolon. The field must begin with an asterisk and end with a semicolon. The following codes are those most often used:

*        Asterisk; First character in command field
recs=    Specifies the load table to use (DO NOT EDIT)
ins=     User initials ("cat" for Cataloging or individual initials)
ov=      Specifies overlay action (ov=o will overlay by OCLC #)
bn=      Bib. Location (bierc, sci, etc.)
ct=      Cat. Date (ct=MM-DD-YY; (month, day, year)
b3=      BCODE 3 (a.k.a. SUPPRESS) (dash "-" for no suppression; other options: z or s)
;        Semi-colon; Last character in the command field

Item Records

Creating item records while in OCLC is very simple. Each item to be added to a single record is created using a separate 949 tag. If you have one item, add one 949. If you have 10 items, add 10 949 tags. The complete chart of available subfields is available online.

Basics:

Tag:                   949
First Indicator:       Blank
Second Indicator:      1

Transferring Name Authority Records as Subjects

Name authorities that you want to transfer as subjects need to have a special 949 inserted into them at the point of transfer from OCLC. This will force them into the subject index. The format is:

949    *atab=asub;
