Policy for Student Employees
Effective: Wednesday, January 02, 2002
Revised September 1, 2004
Each year, the Cataloging Unit hires undergraduate students to perform various tasks within the Department. The following policies apply to Cataloging Department student employees:
- Work time is normally scheduled between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, to coincide with the schedules of the full-time Cataloging Faculty and Staff. Exceptions must be approved in advance by the department head. Exceptions are generally only applicable when making up time.
- At the beginning of each semester, discuss your schedule with the department head, who will approve your schedule and post it for the department. As the semester progresses and you find you need to change your schedule, please let the department head know to update the posted schedule accordingly. This helps us in planning and prioritizing your work.
- If you're going to be away from work during your normal scheduled work time (for vacations, taking a long weekend, etc.), please mark the time on the departmental calendar.
- If you're not going to be able to come in due to illness, broken down vehicle, or other problem, call in and let us know.
- You may take a 15 min paid break for each four (4) CONSECUTIVE hours of work. If you are scheduled for less than 4 hours, breaks are on your own time. As the University policy states, breaks are not a right, but a privilege.
- Lunch is NOT paid work time (unless you are actually working while you are eating lunch).
- Time in and out should be reflected on your time sheets. This includes marking time out when you take lunch or a nonpaid break and marking time in when you return to your duties.
- Remember to turn in your time sheet to the department head for final checking every other Monday so that there will be no problem with getting your paychecks done on time.
- Additional or priority projects for you will be filtered through the department head.
- Checking and responding to personal email is not part of your work time.
- Please be aware of others working around you and keep conversations to a minimum and low in volume.
